AWANA was started in Chicago
Illinois during the 1940's as a way to reach out to boys and girls
who did not go to church on Sunday. Pastor Lance "Doc" Latham of
the North Side Gospel Center developed the program with the help
of his wife "Teach" and a young man named Art Rorheim. As the
uniforms, handbooks, award system and unique game format were
developed, God blessed this new endeavor. The AWANA Youth
Association was officially organized in 1950 and as other churches
saw the program they asked if they could use the same format to
start clubs in their areas.
The AWANA ministry has grown
over the years and has changed to minister effectively to the
children of today. Through rapid growth in the early 1980's and
into the 1990's AWANA is now in 70 countries and 15 languages.
Today the children who gather for AWANA at Foxworthy join
literally hundreds of thousands of children who participate in
AWANA clubs worldwide.
